Modi tells Trump India ‘will never accept’ third-party mediation on Kashmir

(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi firmly told U.S. President Donald Trump that India will never accept third-party mediation in its dispute with Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir. The statement came during a 35-minute phone call on Tuesday, following Trump’s early departure from the G7 summit in Canada.

“Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India has never accepted, does not accept, and will never accept any form of mediation,” Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said during a press briefing on Wednesday. He also noted that there is complete political consensus in India on this position.

The phone call, reportedly initiated by the U.S., also included an invitation from Trump for Modi to visit the U.S. after the G7 summit. Modi declined due to prior obligations, according to Misri.

India’s strong response comes after last month’s brief military clash between India and Pakistan. On May 7, India carried out strikes against suspected terrorist sites in Pakistan-controlled territory, responding to a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in April. Pakistan responded with retaliatory strikes, and both sides agreed to a ceasefire on May 10.

Trump later claimed that he had brokered the ceasefire by leveraging trade negotiations. However, India has dismissed this assertion. Modi clarified in the phone call that trade discussions between India and the U.S. had no bearing on the ceasefire.

The conversation occurred ahead of a scheduled lunch meeting between Trump and Pakistan Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir, who is currently visiting Washington.
