India Cuts Deadline for Removing AI-Generated Content on Social Media
The changes are part of amendments to the Information Technology – Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code – Rules, 2021, which will take effect on Feb. 20, according to reports.
Under the new regulations, platforms must clearly label AI-generated content “in a manner that ensures prominent visibility in the visual display that is easily noticeable and adequately perceivable.” Authorities or courts can now require platforms to remove flagged material within three hours of notification.
Additionally, intermediaries must, within two hours of receiving a complaint from any individual, “take all reasonable and practicable measures to remove or disable access to such content which is hosted, stored, published or transmitted by it.”
India has rapidly expanded its online presence in recent years. Data from Statista shows the country had the world’s largest Facebook audience as of October last year, with over 403 million users, and also leads in YouTube viewership.
The government has emphasized that these rules aim to create an “open, safe, trusted, and accountable internet for its users, including women and children,” reflecting ongoing efforts to curb disinformation on digital platforms.
